Drill

Drill is a raw and aggressive subgenre of hip-hop characterized by its dark, often minimalist production, heavy 808 bass, and frantic hi-hat patterns, creating a menacing and intense sonic landscape. Emerging from Chicago in the early 2010s, it reflects the harsh realities of street life, drawing influence from trap music and gangsta rap. Key artists like Chief Keef, Lil Durk, and G Herbo defined its early sound and lyrical themes. Its cultural impact is significant, spawning various regional scenes like UK Drill, which introduced its own distinct slang and production styles.

More about Drill

Drill is a hip-hop subgenre born in the early 2010s in the south side neighborhoods of Chicago, particularly the South Side, a direct sonic reflection of the realities of urban violence and social precarity characterizing those areas. Influenced by Atlanta's trap and gangsta rap, it nonetheless developed its own sound: deliberately darker, almost threatening beats built on heavy 808 drum machines, anxiety-inducing synthesizer arpeggios, and frantic hi-hats. Chicago drill quickly established itself as an authentic sonic document of a social reality often ignored by mainstream media.

Musically, Drill is characterized by its minimalist and oppressive production: deep 808 basses, dark and repetitive synthesizer melodies, and stocky rhythmic patterns that leave space for the aggressive and often monotonous flows of rappers. Lyrics, delivered with a characteristic cold detachment, unflinchingly describe gang life, street survival, and repeated losses. This aesthetic of assumed brutality distinguishes drill from mainstream hip-hop.

Artists such as Chief Keef, Lil Durk, and G Herbo founded the genre in Chicago. On FestT, one finds VERSATILE, an Irish collective that adapted the drill aesthetic to European culture, as well as GAZO, a rising figure of French drill, and Big Narstie, a representative of UK Drill. KERZA completes this picture of the international drill scene.

With five festivals listed on FestT, Drill remains relatively niche in the festival circuit, partly reflecting the cultural distance this radical genre maintains from the mainstream. Yet its influence is considerable: UK Drill, born in London's working-class neighborhoods, achieved worldwide diffusion and inspired local scenes in many countries, including France with "drill à la française". FestT allows discovery of this international drill scene in all its geographical and stylistic diversity.
