More about Axé

Axé is a Brazilian musical genre born in Salvador de Bahia in the 1980s, at the heart of a vibrant metropolis where African heritage, carnival and popular rhythms intertwine. Its name is borrowed from Yoruba and denotes a vital spiritual energy in candomblé traditions. Carried by the Bahian carnival and its enormous floats known as trios elétricos, axé is from the outset a music of collective celebration and cultural belonging.

Musically, axé fuses several north-eastern and Afro-Brazilian rhythms: frevo, forró, samba-reggae and ijexá coexist in electric, dance-driven productions. Tempos are high, brass instruments are omnipresent, and the choruses are irresistible. Specific dance moves accompany each track, the genre being as much a bodily as an aural experience. Artists like Ivete Sangalo, Claudinha Leitte and Chiclete com Banana have taken axé to every corner of Brazil.

On the contemporary scene, axé continues to dominate Bahia's carnivals and travels with Brazilian communities worldwide. Geronimo is one of the founding figures who defined the genre's identity from its earliest days. The genre maintains strong ties with Latin music and the broader axé world, where every song is a call to dance and togetherness.

Experiencing axé at a festival is above all a physical and collective experience. Brazilian events — starting with Salvador's own carnival, one of the largest in the world with millions of participants — are its natural stage. In Europe, world music festivals and Brazilian-themed nights offer axé sets, allowing dancers and music lovers to feel Bahian energy even far from the Atlantic.
