Blackened Crust

Blackened crust is a fusion as brutal as it is demanding, combining crust punk — the extreme and politicised form of hardcore punk — with 1990s black metal. Born in the anarchist and anti-establishment margins of European and North American underground scenes, it inherits from crust its social rage, DIY aesthetic and punk structures, and from black metal its despairing atmosphere, saturated tremolo riffs and deliberately cold, lo-fi productions. The hybridisation yields a genre of crushing density.

Musically, blackened crust alternates passages of immediate punk violence with more atmospheric and progressive black metal developments. Rhythms shift between the d-beat characteristic of crust and the blast beats of black metal.
