Cumbia Sonidera is a vibrant, often electronic-infused subgenre of cumbia, characterized by its distinctive "sonidero" vocalizations, echo effects, and a driving, danceable rhythm, frequently featuring synthesizers, bass, and percussion. Originating in Mexico City's working-class neighborhoods, it evolved from Colombian cumbia, blending its traditional rhythms with local sounds and the unique performance style of mobile DJs (sonideros) who would "saludar" (greet) and send messages to attendees during live sets. Iconic artists include Rigo Tovar, Los Angeles Azules, and Celso Piña.
