Hi-Nrg, short for High Energy, is an electronic music genre characterized by its driving, uptempo rhythms, prominent synthesizers, and an overall exhilarating atmosphere designed for the dancefloor. Emerging in 1981 from San Francisco's vibrant club scene, it evolved from disco music, with DJs from the gay community accelerating tempos and embracing electronic instrumentation to forge a new, energetic sound. Iconic artists like Sylvester and Divine became synonymous with the genre's pulsating beats and soaring vocals. Its infectious energy significantly impacted dance music culture, paving the way for future electronic styles.
