More about Norteño

Norteño music, also called música norteña, is a popular genre from northern Mexico with roots stretching back to the late nineteenth century. It was born from the encounter between Mexican oral and musical traditions and the folk music brought by German, Polish and Czech immigrant workers who settled in the great haciendas of the North. Polka, waltz and European harmonic structures merged with Mexican rhythms and themes to produce a style that is both festive and deeply rooted in identity, firmly embedded in the borderland culture between Mexico and the United States. The genre belongs to the broader family of Latin music.

Norteño is instantly recognisable through its two emblematic instruments: the diatonic accordion, which carries the melody with expressive and virtuosic playing, and the bajo sexto, a twelve-string bass guitar in six double courses that provides a solid rhythmic and harmonic foundation. Together they form a warm, generous-sounding duo, complemented by a double bass and drums. This instrumentation distinguishes norteño from the more brass-heavy banda sinaloense or the more lyrical bolero. Lyrics, often in the form of corridos, narrate everyday life, love, social dramas or the adventures of legendary figures.

On the current scene, norteño is enjoying a spectacular revival thanks to a new generation of artists blending tradition with contemporary influences. Grupo Frontera brought the genre to a global mainstream audience with collaborations that have amassed billions of streams. Joss Favela embodies the more romantic side of the genre, while Los Lobos have successfully taken these sounds far beyond the Mexican border. Los Pescadores Del Rio Conchos and Edgardo Nuñez remain essential references for the genre's authentic voice.
