More about Bubbling

Bubbling is an electronic dance music genre born in the Netherlands in the late 1980s, within the Caribbean communities of The Hague and Rotterdam. Its origin is attributed to DJ Moortje, originally from Curaçao, who accidentally discovered that playing a Jamaican dancehall record at 45rpm instead of 33rpm produced a faster, higher-pitched and irresistibly danceable sound. This simple technical manipulation sparked an entire genre, deeply rooted in the Dutch post-colonial experience.

Musically, bubbling is characterised by accelerated tempos, upward-pitched dancehall samples, percussion inspired by traditional Antillean music, and synthesisers borrowed from rave culture. In its bubbling house form, which emerged in the 2000s with producers such as Coversquad, Chuckie, and Chippie, the genre incorporates house kicks, aggressive synth loops, and dramatic drops, creating a hybrid of dancehall, house, and US hip-hop. Tracks are built around crudely chopped samples and escalating drum fills leading to punchy drops.

Key artists include pioneering figure De Schuurman (Chippie's nephew), appearing in 2 festivals on FestT, alongside Serginho Boogie, Naffie, and Chuckie. Shaun D's track « Pull Up » (2007) was a landmark moment, reaching over a million streams on early social platforms. Bubbling subsequently influenced Dutch house and, by extension, global EDM throughout the 2010s.

On FestT, bubbling appears in 2 festivals, alongside cousin genres such as breaks, bassline, and big beat. Thanks to labels like Nyege Nyege Tapes reissuing long-forgotten classics, the genre is experiencing a renewed wave of interest among new generations of dancers and producers worldwide.
