Electro

Electro is an electronic music genre characterized by its syncopated rhythms, often built around a "kick--snare-kick--kick-snare" pattern, and a tempo typically ranging from 120 to 140 BPM. Its sound is heavily influenced by the prominent use of drum machines, particularly the TR-808, and incorporates samples derived from funk music. Originating as an abbreviation of electro-funk or electro-boogie, it emerged from the electronic music scene with significant influence from pioneering acts like Kraftwerk. Iconic artists include Afrika Bambaataa and Cybotron, who helped define its early sound. Its impact led to the development of notable subgenres such as electroclash and electro house.

More about Electro

Electronic music traces its roots to early twentieth-century academic experimentation, when composers such as Edgard Varèse and Pierre Schaeffer explored synthetic sound and musique concrète in European research studios. The decisive shift came in the 1970s and 1980s, when electronic sound escaped the academy: Kraftwerk, operating out of Düsseldorf, developed a cold, precise machine aesthetic that would permeate virtually all subsequent popular music. Simultaneously, in the Black communities of Chicago, Detroit, and New York, another current gave rise to house, techno, and electro-funk, rooting electronic music in dance floors rather than concert halls.

Electronic music is defined by its exclusive reliance on synthesisers, drum machines, sequencers, and samplers to build sonic architectures that acoustic instruments cannot replicate. Tempos typically range from 120 to 145 BPM, underpinned by a pulsing bass and layered synthetic textures. It differs from Dance music in its stronger experimental dimension, and from Rock by its complete absence of traditional acoustic instruments as a foundation.

Across more than 1,000 festivals, the electronic scene spans a vast range of sensibilities. CHARLOTTE DE WITTE and her austere Belgian techno, AMELIE LENS, a central figure of the European club circuit, and VLADIMIR CAUCHEMAR with his dark, organic house all represent the scene's depth. GORILLAZ and BOYS NOIZE embody the genre's fertile crossovers with rock and hip-hop.
