More about Coke Rap

Coke rap is a subgenre of hip-hop that emerged in the wake of American gangsta rap in the 1990s, focusing its subject matter on cocaine dealing and the realities of street-level drug trafficking. Where mafioso rap evoked organised crime with a Hollywood veneer, coke rap adopts a ground-level perspective, documenting with meticulous realism the codes, dangers and economic dynamics of everyday dealing. The musical production — often minimalist and cold — reinforces this aesthetic of raw authenticity.

Its roots reach back to the 1980s, when tracks like Grandmaster Flash's « White Lines » carried a cautionary message. Through the 1990s, artists like Raekwon, Ghostface Killah and The Notorious B.I.G. helped normalise the dealer's narrative as a central storytelling stance in rap. It was in the 2000s that coke rap truly crystallised into an identifiable genre, largely through Clipse and their single « Grindin' », produced by The Neptunes, combining unflinching lyrics with stripped-back beatmaking.

Among the major figures of the genre, Clipse stand as absolute pioneers. Pusha T, one half of the duo, is now considered the master of the form with a lyrical rigour comparable to JAY-Z's narrative complexity. Freddie Gibbs and Westside Gunn represent the next generation, while Young Jeezy and French Montana brought the genre to wider audiences.

On FestT, coke rap appears in demanding hip-hop programmes alongside boom bap, trap and gangsta rap. A genre that, beyond provocation, casts a lucid and often poignant eye on the effects of drugs in the most vulnerable communities.
