Contemporary Christian
Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) typically presents a modern popular sound, often pop-centric with elements of rock and alternative, characterized by accessible melodies, contemporary instrumentation, and an uplifting, inspirational atmosphere. Emerging from the Jesus Movement revival in the 1960s, it sought to express Christian faith through popular music styles, moving beyond traditional hymns and gospel to reach a broader audience. Iconic artists like Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, and Casting Crowns are representative of the genre's enduring appeal. Often called Christian Pop, CCM has significantly impacted Christian media and worship practices globally.
More about Contemporary Christian
Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) is a genre of modern popular music centred on Christian faith values and messages, born in the United States in the wake of the late 1960s Jesus Movement revival. Initially known as 'Jesus Music', it became institutionalised under the CCM label during the 1970s and 1980s. Larry Norman, often called the 'father of Christian rock', was one of its pioneers with his album 'Upon This Rock' (1969). A sub-genre of the broader Pop family, CCM has since migrated well beyond the church to establish itself on mainstream radio and in large concert venues worldwide.
Musically, CCM is an umbrella term encompassing Christian rock, alternative pop, gospel hip-hop, Christian country, metal, and contemporary worship music. What unifies these styles is less a common sound than a lyrical content oriented towards faith, hope, redemption, and praise. Compared to secular Alternative Pop or experimental Art Pop, CCM prioritises maximum accessibility and a communal intent — music designed to be sung together.
The current festival scene brings together artists with diverse profiles. Switchfoot, the San Diego band, has successfully navigated the decades with an influential and accessible Christian alternative rock sound. Donnie McClurkin represents the gospel R&B side of CCM, with a powerfully expressive voice recognised internationally. Michael English embodies the adult contemporary CCM tradition, while Katy Nichole and Anne Wilson represent the new generation of faith-driven voices.
