Country Rap

Country rap, also known as hick-hop, blends the rhythmic energy and vocal delivery of hip-hop with the instrumentation and storytelling of country music, often featuring banjos, guitars, and trap beats for a unique, genre-bending sound. Its roots can be traced back to the folk narratives of Woody Guthrie, evolving through artists who infused country influences into rap rock. Key figures include Bubba Sparxxx, Cowboy Troy, and Nappy Roots, who helped define the genre's early sound. The genre gained significant global recognition in 2019 with Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road," demonstrating its broad appeal and cultural impact.

More about Country Rap

Country rap — also called hick-hop or country hip-hop — is a fusion genre blending the melodies, instrumentation and themes of American country music with the rhythms, flow and production of hip-hop. Its roots run deep: historians trace them back to the talking blues of Jimmy Dean ("Big Bad John", 1961), Johnny Cash's spoken delivery ("A Boy Named Sue", 1969) and Charlie Daniels' humorous monologues. But it is in the early 1990s that the fusion becomes deliberate and self-identified, particularly with UGK and their declared use of "country rap" to describe Southern rural rap. The movement experiences a second life in the 2010s with the "Yee Haw" wave, popularised by hip-hop producers incorporating country elements into their beats, beginning with Young Thug.

Musically, country rap juxtaposes banjo, fiddle and acoustic guitar with sub bass and hip-hop snares. Lyrics oscillate between rap's braggadocio — jacked-up trucks, rural pride — and classic country themes: family land, Southern nostalgia, community. Compared to bro-country, which stays closer to mainstream country radio codes, country rap more openly embraces hybridisation and attracts a younger audience from both cultures. Production is often rawer and less polished than commercial country.

On the festival circuit, Demun Jones leads the count with 8 festival appearances, representing the genre's independent scene. Jelly Roll, from Tennessee, is one of the breakout artists of recent years, reaching country, rap and rock audiences alike with raw authenticity and personal lyrics about redemption. Colt Ford, a genre pioneer, and The Lacs complete this picture representing the Georgian tradition of the style.
