Country rap — also called hick-hop or country hip-hop — is a fusion genre blending the melodies, instrumentation and themes of American country music with the rhythms, flow and production of hip-hop. Its roots run deep: historians trace them back to the talking blues of Jimmy Dean ("Big Bad John", 1961), Johnny Cash's spoken delivery ("A Boy Named Sue", 1969) and Charlie Daniels' humorous monologues. But it is in the early 1990s that the fusion becomes deliberate and self-identified, particularly with UGK and their declared use of "country rap" to describe Southern rural rap. The movement experiences a second life in the 2010s with the "Yee Haw" wave, popularised by hip-hop producers incorporating country elements into their beats, beginning with Young Thug.
Musically, country rap juxtaposes banjo, fiddle and acoustic guitar with sub bass and hip-hop snares. Production is often rawer and less polished than commercial country.
