Electronic rock, also known as synth rock or electro rock, fuses the raw energy of rock with the synthetic textures of electronic music, characterized by a blend of guitars, drums, synthesizers, and electronic beats, creating a dynamic and often atmospheric soundscape. Its origins trace back to the late 1960s when rock bands began integrating electronic instruments, evolving through influences from punk rock, industrial rock, hip hop, techno, and synth-pop. Iconic artists like Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, and Radiohead exemplify the genre's diverse range. This fusion has also spawned notable subgenres such as indietronica, dance-punk, and electroclash, impacting various facets of contemporary music.
