Tiny on the map, Belgium punches like a giant when it comes to festivals: nowhere on Earth packs so many into so few square kilometres. At the very top sits Tomorrowland, a cathedral of electronic music raised each summer in Boom, whose fairy-tale stage sets turn the Flemish town into the world capital of EDM. Yet the country's rock heart beats just as hard: Rock Werchter, the legendary field crowned best festival in Europe time and again, and its alternative cousin Pukkelpop have headlined Flanders for decades.

Metal finds one of its biggest gatherings on the continent here too, at the Graspop Metal Meeting, which turns Dessel into a pilgrimage for thunderous riffs.
