Experimental rock, or avant-garde rock, pushes traditional compositional boundaries, often incorporating unusual instrumentation, unconventional tempos, and diverse vocal techniques to create unique soundscapes. Emerging in the late 1960s, it draws heavily from free jazz artists like John Coltrane and Sun Ra, alongside avant-garde composers such as John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen, while also building upon the Beatles' early pop and classical fusions. Iconic artists include Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, and Can. This genre significantly influenced the development of post-punk and art-rock, challenging mainstream rock conventions and fostering a spirit of innovation.
