Goregrind

Goregrind is a visceral subgenre characterized by its often extremely fast tempos, blast beats, and guttural vocals, though some branches favor a slower, heavier, "groovy" approach. This brutal sound, typically delivered by guitars, bass, and drums, creates an intense and often disturbing atmosphere. Its origins lie in the late 1980s, evolving from the fusion of death metal and grindcore, with early influences like Repulsion and Impetigo paving the way. Carcass is widely credited as the foundational band, shaping the genre's defining characteristics. Iconic artists include Last Days of Humanity, Cock and Ball Torture, and Rompeprop.

More about Goregrind

Goregrind is an extreme subgenre of grindcore and death metal that emerged in the late 1980s. Its origins are intimately linked to the early work of British band CARCASS, whose first two albums (*Reek of Putrefaction*, 1988, and *Symphonies of Sickness*, 1989) established the genre's defining codes: medical and pathological lyrics, gore imagery and abrasively extreme music. Repulsion's *Horrified* and Impetigo's *Ultimo Mondo Cannibale* complete the founding canon.

Musically, goregrind is defined by its pitch-shifted vocals — dropped to inhuman registers — detuned guitars, frantic blast-beat drumming and the characteristic high-pitched snare sound nicknamed «biscuit tin». Lyrics dwell on pathology, decomposition, violence and death, often with an ironic distance inspired by Z-grade horror films. Goregrind is brutal, short and utterly uncompromising.

The contemporary goregrind scene remains a proudly underground niche. Gutalax, a Czech band, is one of its most active festival representatives, blending gore and unapologetic scatological humour. RECTAL SMEGMA pushes the aesthetic to its furthest extremes, while CARCASS, the founding fathers, continue to tour in a more evolved death metal incarnation.

Goregrind is regularly programmed at extreme metal festivals such as Obscene Extreme in the Czech Republic — a festival dedicated to grindcore and goregrind — and Brutal Assault. It coexists with grindcore and brutal death metal, drawing an international community united by a cult of noise and excess.
