The term itself was reclaimed by the band Pop Will Eat Itself to describe a musical subculture of the late Thatcher era, bringing together groups that rejected the gloom of post-punk and the naivety of twee pop. Driven by acts like Pop Will Eat Itself, The Wonder Stuff, and Ned's Atomic Dustbin, the grebo scene briefly but brilliantly dominated the pages of music weeklies NME and Melody Maker, becoming a fixture — and sometimes a headliner — at the Reading Festival around 1990.
