Holy Minimalism, also known as mystical or spiritual minimalism, is characterized by a serene, often contemplative soundscape, employing minimalist compositional techniques with a distinctly religious or mystical focus, typically featuring slow harmonic rhythms and a sense of timelessness. Emerging in the late 20th century, it developed from the broader minimalist movement, reacting against the prevailing complexities of serialism and aleatoric music while drawing inspiration from earlier minimalists like Terry Riley and Philip Glass. Arvo Pärt, Henryk Górecki, and John Tavener are among its most iconic exponents. This genre profoundly impacted contemporary classical music by reintroducing spiritual depth and accessibility.
