Classical at festivals

Classical music festivals are seated events: piano recitals, chamber music, orchestral concerts and sometimes staged opera, mostly in summer and in heritage settings. The Festival d'Aix-en-Provence opened in 1948 with Così fan tutte and still builds each July around opera, Mozart above all, at the Théâtre de l'Archevêché. The Salzburg Festival, founded in 1920 by Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Richard Strauss, fills the city from late July to the end of August, with Jedermann staged every year on Cathedral Square.

For piano, the reference is La Roque-d'Anthéron, where since 1981 recitals have been played outdoors in July and August under an acoustic shell in the park of the Château de Florans. Off-season, La Folle Journée in Nantes, started in 1995, packs cheap 45-minute concerts into late January or early February. In October, Les Journées Ravel, founded in 1996, take over Montfort-l'Amaury, the town Ravel chose as his home.
