Memphis Rap

Memphis Rap: 17 upcoming festivals, including 6 with tickets on sale.

Memphis Rap is characterized by its lo-fi, "distorted" soundscapes, repetitive vocal hooks, and minimal synth melodies, often featuring double-time and triplet flows over Roland TR-808 drum machine beats. Originating in Memphis, Tennessee, in the mid-to-late 1980s, it emerged from a DIY ethos, sampling everything from soul and funk to horror movie soundtracks and classical music. Iconic artists like Three 6 Mafia, 8Ball & MJG, and Tommy Wright III defined the genre's raw, often dark aesthetic. Its cultural impact is significant, influencing subsequent generations of Southern hip-hop and contributing to the rise of trap music.
