Neo Soul

Neo Soul: 43 upcoming festivals, including 18 with tickets on sale.

Neo Soul, also known as Nu Soul, is a modern soul genre characterized by its smooth, often laid-back grooves, intricate instrumentation, and a focus on rich vocal harmonies and emotional depth. It typically blends elements of 1970s soul with jazz, funk, hip-hop, and even house music, creating a sophisticated and often introspective atmosphere. Coined by Kedar Massenburg of Motown Records in the late 1990s, the genre emerged as an alternative to mainstream R&B, prioritizing musical quality and intensity. Erykah Badu, D'Angelo, and Maxwell are iconic artists who defined the sound. Its appeal often resonates with an underground audience seeking a more authentic and less commercial musical experience.
