Oi
Oi is a raw, aggressive punk rock subgenre characterized by driving guitar riffs, thumping basslines, and powerful, often shouted, singalong vocals, creating an anthemic and energetic atmosphere. Emerging in late 1970s Britain, it was a working-class response to perceived commercialism in mainstream punk, drawing heavily from early punk and pub rock influences. Iconic artists like Sham 69, Cock Sparrer, and The 4-Skins defined the genre's sound and ethos. Oi's straightforward, no-nonsense approach and focus on working-class solidarity left a lasting impact on subsequent punk and hardcore scenes.
More about Oi
Oi! is a punk rock subgenre born in the United Kingdom at the very end of the 1970s, as a direct and assertive response from the British working class to what it perceived as an artistic elitisation of punk. Where "original" punk had been appropriated by artistic circles and music critics, Oi! intended to remain brutally rooted in the reality of estates and construction sites, pubs, and football stadiums.
Musically, Oi! is characterised by direct and incisive guitars, thumping basslines, martial drumming, and above all collective singalong choruses — often taken up in unison by the whole group or the audience — giving it a unique anthemic power. Songs are generally short and direct, with few sophisticated arrangements. The voice is often shouted or chanted rather than sung. Tempos are moderate to fast, always in an energetic and frontal register. Lyrical themes revolve around working-class solidarity, class pride, everyday life, and sometimes football.
The founding groups of Oi! are absolute references of working-class punk culture. Sham 69, Cock Sparrer, and The 4-Skins laid the genre's stylistic foundations. On FestT, LOS FASTIDIOS is the most represented artist with 13 appearances, attesting to the dynamism of the international Oi! scene. COCKNEY REJECTS (9 appearances), Cock Sparrer (6), Lion's Law (4), and VANDAL (4) complete this vibrant scene.
