More about Piedmont Blues

Piedmont Blues is one of the most refined and joyful styles of American blues, born in the Piedmont region — a vast coastal plateau stretching from Richmond, Virginia, to Atlanta, Georgia. Emerging in the 1920s, this musical current developed at the crossroads of gospel, ragtime, parlour music and African-American string band traditions. Unlike the often dark and minimalist Delta Blues, Piedmont Blues stands out for its uptempo character and festive colour, inherited from the dances and social gatherings of the American South-East.

The sonic signature of Piedmont Blues rests on a sophisticated fingerpicking technique: the thumb maintains a steady, alternating bass line while the index finger — and sometimes others — weaves a syncopated melody on the treble strings, mimicking the independent voices of a ragtime or stride pianist. This 'talking' guitar, simultaneously rhythmic and melodic, gives the style an elegance and harmonic complexity rarely found in other forms of blues. Pieces alternate virtuosic passages, delicate breaks and driving refrains that invite dancing.

The genre's pioneers — Blind Blake, Blind Boy Fuller, Rev. Gary Davis, Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry — built an immense repertoire, taken up and reinterpreted by successive generations. Today, artists such as Dom Flemons, former member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops and known as 'The American Songster', carry on this tradition with a constant commitment to authenticity and transmission. Eric Bibb, Keb' Mo' and Guy Davis are also among the contemporary figures of this style. Find Dom Flemons in our artist catalogue and discover his upcoming festival dates.
