Blues at festivals

Blues was born among African Americans in the Deep South of the United States in the second half of the 19th century. From acoustic Delta blues to the post-war electric Chicago sound and later blues rock, blues festivals tend to cover that whole range. In Europe they are mostly mid-sized town festivals, held indoors or on city-centre stages, and the oldest ones date back to the 1980s.

In France, Cahors Blues Festival, launched in 1982, runs in July, around Bastille Day. Blues sur Seine, founded in 1999 in Mantes-la-Jolie, tours the towns of the Seine valley west of Paris each November, reaching schools and community centres. In Norway, Notodden Blues Festival has run since 1988 and straddles late July and early August. Town-based events like these often sell single-night tickets as well as passes.
