More about Ratchet Music

Ratchet music is a minimalist, club-oriented strain of West Coast American hip-hop that crystallised in the early 2010s in Los Angeles. It owes its rise to producer DJ Mustard (Dijon McFarlane), who imposed his style with Tyga's track "Rack City" in 2012 — a major hit reaching the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 and popularising a sound as immediate as it is addictive. The term "ratchet" draws from African-American party culture slang, originally associated with Shreveport, Louisiana, before being reclaimed by the Los Angeles scene to designate a festive, unabashed, and defiant aesthetic.

Sonically, ratchet music is built on a stripped-down 808 drum kit — deep kicks, crisp claps, syncopated hi-hats — bouncy tempos between 95 and 105 BPM, memorable synth or piano stabs, and a sub-bass that intentionally leaves space for vocals. It is a sound engineered for radio and the club simultaneously: repetitive hooklines, direct structures, zero excess. Compared to more lyrical traditional hip-hop, or the experimental approach of alternative hip-hop, ratchet music fully embraces its popular, danceable vocation. It also shares links with afro trap through its effective rhythmic simplicity.

Tyga and Mustard remain the leading figures of the genre on today's festival circuit, carrying the Los Angeles sound that dominated the charts between 2012 and 2015 before irrigating other registers such as trap and urban pop. The ratchet movement also influenced YG, Ty Dolla $ign, and Kid Ink, consolidating an LA ecosystem that exports successfully to hip-hop festivals worldwide. Ratchet music reached its critical popularity peak in 2014, hailed by Billboard as the "sound of the year".

FestT lists 4 festivals featuring ratchet music, often within summer hip-hop programmes with a strong club component. To explore neighbouring styles within hip-hop, check out afro trap festivals, which share this love of percussive minimalism and bass that makes speakers shake.
