Thall
More about Thall
Thall is a subgenre of progressive metal and djent that emerged in the early 2010s, primarily in Scandinavia. Driven by Swedish band Vildhjarta, it is distinguished by an extremely dense sonic aesthetic, very low guitar tunings — often in B or lower — and destabilising polymetric rhythms. The term itself was invented by the community around this band, designating an indefinable quality of darkness and heaviness.
Musically, Thall is characterised by hypnotic seven- or eight-string guitar riffs, a saturated and cavernous sound treatment, complex rhythmic structures at the border of djent and doom, and a near-absence of melodic vocals. Guitars intertwine in repetitive and entrancing patterns that create a sense of vertigo and immersion. The atmosphere is cold, nihilistic and of extreme sonic density.
The Thall scene is intentionally underground, almost cult-like. Vildhjarta remains its founding and most influential band, with a rare but revered catalogue. CABAL brings a more brutal and noisy dimension, while Ice Sealed Eyes explores the most atmospheric fringes of the genre. These bands share a taste for long labyrinthine compositions and a refusal of commercial compromise.
Although discreet in mainstream programming, Thall finds its place at extreme metal and djent festivals, particularly in Northern Europe. Fans of progressive metal and djent form its natural audience. Its sonic radicalism makes it a reference genre for guitarists and composers seeking to push the boundaries of heavy music.
