What are the festival dates and opening hours?
Canal Street takes place in Arendal from Wednesday 22 July to Saturday 25 July 2026. Concerts run Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; Saturday 25 July closes with a street parade at 12:00 (Torvet–Pollen–Poppes plass) and a jazz brunch at Poppes plass at 13:00. The main stage at Sam Eydes plass plays from 17:00 to 23:30. The festival office (Festivalkontoret, at Kulturkammeret) is open 15:00–21:00 on Monday and 09:00–21:00 Tuesday to Friday.
Where is the festival held and how do you get there?
The festival is held in Arendal, on Norway's south coast, spread across several venues: Sam Eydes plass (main stage), Arendal Kulturhus (jazz concerts), Teaterplassen (Local Street), Strømsbo Gård, the Arendal cemetery (Arendal kirkegård), the Kulturkammeret and the Clarion Hotel Tyholmen. The festival office is at Kulturkammeret, entrance via the stairs at Kanalplassen. For the cemetery: bus 110 from the town centre (stop F) or a 20-minute walk. Ferries also serve the area (M/F Kolbjørn III and Skilsøferga).
How much do tickets and passes cost?
The Festival Pass (all stages) is 2320 kr but is sold out (UTSOLGT). The Day Pass (one day, all stages) is 1110 kr and the Jazz Pass (all jazz concerts) is 1150 kr. Single tickets: main stage at Sam Eydes plass 900 kr, jazz concerts at Kulturhus 600 kr, cemetery concert 600 kr, picnic at Strømsbo Gård 500 kr, alcohol-free youth concert at Kulturkammeret 220 kr, hotel jam at Clarion Tyholmen 200 kr. Children under 12 enter free. Buy via Ticketmaster.no or, during festival week, at the Festivalkontoret.
Is there food available on site?
Bars are available at all concerts except the cemetery. For food: Arendal Streetfood at Sam Eydes plass and Kambuzi (pizza) at Strømsbo Gård. At Strømsbo Gård a picnic basket is allowed (but no drinks). Drinks brought from outside are not permitted anywhere.
Is payment cashless?
Yes. All payments are made by bank card only — no cash is accepted at the festival.
How many stages are there and what's the daily line-up?
The festival runs several stages in parallel. The main stage (Sam Eydes plass) hosts Fake News, Harry's Bar, Odd Nordstoga and Morten Abel on Thursday 23 July, then Rockebandet Ændal, Simen Steinklev, OnklP and Kjartan Lauritzen on Friday 24. The jazz stage (Arendal Kulturhus) plays all three days (including Bugge Wesseltoft, Bushman's Revenge, D'Sound). Local Street at Teaterplassen is free, as is BarneStreet each day at Kanalplassen. The cemetery concert (Eva Weel Skram) is on Wednesday, with late-night jams at the Clarion Tyholmen.
Is there an age limit and are children allowed?
Children under 12 enter free at most stages. Under-18s must be accompanied by a sober adult holding their own ticket (lowered to under 16 for the cemetery concert). BarneStreet is a fully free programme for children. The Clarion Tyholmen jam is restricted to ages 20 and over. For the youth concert at Kulturkammeret, everyone needs their own ticket regardless of age.
What can and can't you bring?
Drinks, alcohol and other substances brought from outside are banned at concert sites. Also prohibited: professional photo/video/audio equipment, selfie sticks, tablets/iPads, laser pointers and lamps, sharp or heavy objects, bottles and cans (even empty), gas canisters and fireworks, large luggage, chairs and stools, face-covering masks, umbrellas, banners with offensive or commercial messages, and animals (except guide dogs). A security check is carried out at the entrance to each concert.
When was the festival founded?
Canal Street was founded in 1996 and has been held annually in Arendal ever since. The festival is rooted in jazz and blues and is known for using unusual venues (the Torungen lighthouse, maritime harbours, the Kolbjørnsvik ferry landing…) that blend music with local heritage and history. Since 2006 it has also welcomed major international artists alongside the Norwegian and Scandinavian scene.
