Jazz at festivals

Jazz festivals rarely happen in a muddy field. The music plays in theatres, clubs, big tops and pine groves, across a week or more. France took to the format early, with Nice in 1948 and Cannes in 1958. Summer belongs to the big Riviera events, while autumn is the season of city festivals where jazz shares bills with soul, funk, blues and world music.

Newport Jazz Festival has run in Newport, Rhode Island, every summer since 1954. Jazz à Juan followed in July 1960 at Juan-les-Pins, with concerts under the pines of the Pinède Gould. Tourcoing Jazz Festival, founded in 1986, opens on the second weekend of October and runs eight days, from the Magic Mirrors tent to the Théâtre Raymond Devos. November brings the EFG London Jazz Festival, going since 1992, which spreads from the Barbican and the Royal Festival Hall to Ronnie Scott's and the Vortex.
