Bounce is a high-energy, percussive subgenre of hip-hop characterized by its distinctive call-and-response vocals, heavy basslines, and often frantic, syncopated rhythms, creating an infectious, party-ready atmosphere. Originating in New Orleans in the late 1980s, it emerged from a fusion of local Mardi Gras Indian chants, drum machine beats, and the raw energy of early hip-hop and Southern funk. Pioneering artists like DJ Jimi, Mannie Fresh, and Juvenile were instrumental in defining its sound and bringing it to prominence. Its influence is deeply embedded in Southern hip-hop, fostering a vibrant dance culture and contributing to the broader landscape of trap music.
