Contemporary R&B is characterized by smooth, often sensual vocals layered over a blend of electronic production, prominent drum machine rhythms, and frequently incorporates synthesized instrumentation, creating a polished, mid-tempo groove. Emerging in the United States during the 1980s, it evolved from traditional rhythm and blues, heavily influenced by hip-hop, soul, pop, and funk, gaining significant traction throughout the 1990s and becoming a dominant genre in the 2000s. Iconic artists include Mariah Carey, Usher, and Beyoncé. Its widespread appeal shaped the sound of popular music for decades, leaving an undeniable mark on global culture.
