Hardcore Punk is an aggressive, fast-paced subgenre of punk rock characterized by raw, distorted guitars, frantic drumming, and shouted vocals, creating an intense and often confrontational atmosphere. Emerging from the underground scenes of Southern California in the late 1970s and later on the East Coast in the 1980s, it evolved from traditional punk's rebellious spirit, pushing its speed and intensity to new extremes. Hardcore punk was forged in the late 1970s and early 1980s across several American cities — Los Angeles, Washington D.C., New York and Boston — as a radical reaction against what its protagonists saw as the commercialisation and dilution of original punk rock. Black Flag in Los Angeles, Minor Threat and Bad Brains in Washington D.C., Dead Kennedys in San Francisco: these pioneering bands redefined the boundaries of punk by pushing tempos to extremes, hardening the guitar tones, and adopting a strict DIY ethic built around independent labels, fanzines and self-managed touring circuits.
Musically, hardcore punk is defined by its velocity — tempos frequently exceed 200 BPM — its brevity (songs rarely surpass two minutes) and its aggressive sonic intensity. Guitars are heavily distorted and played with an almost percussive rhythmic attack, the bass is thick and relentless, and the drums strike with extreme speed and power. Vocals, typically shouted or screamed, carry politicised, socially critical or introspective lyrics. This sonic foundation has spawned numerous subgenres: metalcore, which merges metal and hardcore conventions; post-hardcore, more experimental and melodic; and powerviolence, pushing further into extremity. Close kinship also exists with metal, the two genres having cross-pollinated extensively since the 1980s.
