Nerdcore

Nerdcore is a subgenre of hip-hop that emerged around the turn of the millennium, with the earliest documented use of the term dating to MC Frontalot's 2000 song « Nerdcore Hiphop ». A grassroots movement facilitated by the internet and online file-sharing communities, it allowed artists to bypass traditional music industry gatekeepers and self-produce and distribute their work. Long before the label existed, artists like MF Doom, Deltron 3030, and the Beastie Boys were already exploring science fiction, video games, and pop culture references in their hip-hop lyrics.

Musically, nerdcore borrows hip-hop's instrumental structures — boom bap, sampled beats, home-studio production — and clothes them in cerebral lyrics celebrating geek culture: video games, comics, fantasy literature, coding, and pop culture references. Unlike battle rap with its competitive verbal performance, or abstract hip-hop with its more experimental textures, nerdcore fully embraces its referential, sometimes humorous stance and adheres to a DIY ethic close to punk. Technical flow is regularly deployed in service of storytelling and cultural reference rather than status assertion.
