More about Northern Soul

Northern Soul is far more than a music genre: it is a cultural movement born in northern England around 1970, built on the rediscovery and celebration of a repertoire of 1960s American soul that had been overlooked by major record labels. The term is attributed to London DJ and record shop owner Dave Godin, who noticed around 1970 that young people from northern England were buying energetic soul 45s from small, obscure American independent labels rather than the mainstream soul played on the radio.

Musically, Northern Soul is defined by fast tempos — typically above 100 BPM — powerful basslines, expressive brass sections and emotionally charged soul vocals rooted in the African-American gospel tradition. In contrast to the polished sound of Motown, the movement prized rawer productions, often from obscure labels like Ric-Tic or Shrine. Northern Soul culture is inseparable from its iconic venues — Wigan Casino, Manchester''s Twisted Wheel, Stoke-on-Trent''s Torch — and the all-night dance marathons that took place there, characterised by acrobatics, spins and frenetic footwork. The story of soul music in the UK, spanning Chicago Soul, Deep Soul and Contemporary Soul, was in large part shaped by this movement.

Among the most iconic artists associated with Northern Soul nights are Edwin Starr, Frank Wilson — whose single Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) is considered the definitive Northern Soul record — and Jimmy Radcliffe. Today, artists such as BROOKE Combe carry on an authentic British soul tradition on contemporary stages, while John Newman openly draws on this heritage to fuel his modern pop soul sound.

On FestT, Northern Soul is featured across 12 festivals, primarily soul, funk and retro events in the UK and across Europe. BROOKE Combe is the scene''s most active artist, appearing on 10 festival line-ups, reflecting growing renewed interest in this music among younger generations. Related styles like Neo Soul and Doo Wop frequently share the bill with Northern Soul at these events.
