Nwobhm
NWOBHM delivered a potent blend of traditional heavy metal power with punk rock's raw intensity, characterized by fast tempos, aggressive riffs, and a driving rhythm section, often featuring soaring vocals and intricate guitar solos. Emerging in mid-1970s England as punk rock waned and new wave dominated, it revitalized heavy metal by infusing it with a DIY ethos and a renewed sense of urgency. Iconic artists like Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, and Saxon spearheaded the movement. Its cultural impact was immense, laying foundational elements for subsequent extreme metal genres and influencing countless bands worldwide.
More about Nwobhm
NWOBHM — the New Wave of British Heavy Metal — is one of the most important movements in heavy metal history. Born in England in the mid-1970s as punk rock was waning, it restored heavy metal's credibility by infusing it with the raw energy and do-it-yourself attitude of punk, while retaining the technical power and guitar virtuosity inherent to traditional metal.
Musically, NWOBHM is characterised by fast tempos and direct aggression inherited from punk, punchy and often melodic guitar riffs, energetic drumming, and powerful vocals capable of soaring into high registers. Guitar solos are frequent and technically elaborate, attesting to a real musical ambition that sets this current apart from punk. The overall atmosphere is dark and epic, blending martial, fantastical, or introspective themes in compositions often longer and more structured than those of punk.
The founding groups of NWOBHM left an indelible mark on all of metal history. Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, and Saxon are its most universally known representatives. On FestT, Tailgunner, IRON MAIDEN, and Saxon share the top spot with 12 appearances each. JUDAS PRIEST (9 appearances) and DEF LEPPARD (4 appearances) attest to the exceptional longevity of these founding artists on current stages.
