Pop Soul is characterized by its driving rhythms, often accentuated by handclaps and spontaneous body movements, featuring a call-and-response dynamic between lead and backing vocals, a distinctively tense vocal sound, and occasional improvised embellishments. This popular genre emerged from African American communities in the late 1950s and early 1960s, deeply rooted in African American gospel music and rhythm and blues, blending their core elements. Iconic artists like Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, and Stevie Wonder exemplify its sound. Pop Soul profoundly reflects African American identity, emphasizing the significance of their culture and leaving an indelible mark on popular music.
