Power Noise

More about Power Noise

Power noise — also known as rhythmic noise or distorted beat music — is a subgenre of noise and post-industrial music that emerged in Europe during the 1990s. Its earliest antecedents reach back to the 1980s with Spanish industrial project Esplendor Geométrico and to the early 1990s with Belgian project Dive. The term itself was coined in 1997 by Raoul Roucka of Noisex with the track « United (Power Noise Movement) », giving a scattered movement a common identity. Rooted in the broader industrial and gothic family, power noise belongs to the long tradition of extreme European electronic music.

Musically, power noise is built around a saturated, distorted drum-machine kick — typically a Roland TR-909 — laid over militaristic 4/4 patterns. Tracks are usually instrumental, with any melodic element remaining secondary to rhythmic impact. Danceability coexists with an abrasive, oppressive quality that sets the genre apart from the more vocal aggrotech or the more contemplative dark ambient. German labels Ant-Zen and HANDS, together with their annual festivals Maschinenfest and Forms of Hands, structured the scene at the turn of the millennium.

On the current scene, Chainreactor represents power noise's most dancefloor-oriented wing, delivering hammering tracks engineered for industrial clubs. Unter Null adds a darker emotional dimension, while Mai Mai Mai pushes into experimental territory, crossing the genre with ritual music and contemporary noise aesthetics. The scene remains active at specialist festivals across Europe, with particularly strong footholds in Germany, Belgium, and the Czech Republic.
