Industrial music is characterized by its abrasive, experimental soundscapes, often incorporating harsh electronics, distorted samples, and repetitive, driving rhythms to create a confrontational and often unsettling atmosphere. Emerging in the 1970s, it drew heavily from avant-garde art, noise music, and the bleak social commentary of post-punk. Iconic artists like Throbbing Gristle and Einstürzende Neubauten defined the genre's early sound. The subsequent post-industrial movement diversified significantly, blending these origins with rock, electronic dance music, and heavy metal, leading to subgenres like EBM and darkwave that profoundly influenced alternative culture.
