Dark ambient is an electronic music genre characterized by expansive, often dissonant soundscapes, minimal rhythm, and a pervasive sense of dread or isolation, frequently incorporating noise and industrial elements. Emerging from late 1970s industrial music experimentation, it gained popularity in the 1980s, drawing significant influence from horror films and early ambient works. Key artists include Lustmord, Raison d'être, and In Slaughter Natives. Its atmospheric depth often lends itself to themes of desolation and the sublime.
