Street Punk

Street punk delivers a raw, aggressive sound characterized by driving guitars, pounding drums, and shouted vocals, creating an unpretentious, high-energy atmosphere. Emerging in the 1980s as a working-class response to the artistic pretensions of early British punk, it evolved from the Oi! subgenre, retaining its directness while expanding its musical scope. Iconic artists like The Exploited, GBH, and Discharge exemplify the genre's uncompromising spirit. Its cultural impact is rooted in its defiant working-class identity and rejection of mainstream norms.

More about Street Punk

Street Punk emerged in the late 1970s in Britain, carried by a working-class youth that rejected both the artistic pretensions of avant-garde punk and the progressive rock of the previous decade. Pioneers like Sham 69, the UK Subs, and the Cockney Rejects forged a raw, direct, street-level sound soon dubbed Oi! by music journalist Garry Bushell in 1980. The movement is inseparable from its visual aesthetic: coloured mohawks, bombers, boots, and tattoos that openly declare a working-class allegiance.

Musically, street punk relies on power and simplicity: sharp guitar riffs, hammering drums, shouted gang choruses, and fast tempos borrowed from hardcore. By 1982, bands like GBH and The Exploited pushed the sound toward greater aggression, absorbing heavy metal influences to create an even more abrasive form. Lyrics tackle alcohol, fighting, neighbourhood life, class solidarity, and distrust of institutions head-on.

The genre experienced a major revival in the 1990s–2000s with bands like Rancid and the Casualties. On the current scene, Dropkick Murphys stand as the genre's global ambassador, blending street punk with Irish folk. The Exploited continue to tour with absolute fidelity to their original sound, while The Business have steadfastly represented the London Oi! tradition since the 1980s.

Punk festivals are the temples of street punk: Punk Rock Holiday in Slovenia, Rebellion Festival in England, and Punk Rock Bowling in the United States bring together thousands of punks of all generations each year. These gatherings are far more than concerts: they celebrate community belonging and cultural resistance that, forty years after its beginnings, remains as fierce as ever.
