Thrashcore

Thrashcore is an exceptionally fast and intense subgenre of hardcore punk, characterized by blistering tempos, aggressive vocals, and a raw, unpolished sound driven by rapid-fire drumming and distorted guitars. Originating in the 1980s, it emerged from the hardcore punk scene, pushing the boundaries of speed and ferocity, often predating the crossover thrash movement. Iconic artists like D.R.I. (in their early phase) are quintessential examples of the genre's relentless energy. Sometimes referred to as fastcore, it significantly influenced subsequent extreme music genres.

More about Thrashcore

Thrashcore, also known as fastcore, is a subgenre of hardcore punk that emerged in the United States in the early 1980s. Where hardcore had already distinguished itself from punk rock through greater intensity and aggression, thrashcore took this principle to its extreme by adopting truly frantic tempos. Pioneer bands such as D.R.I. (Houston), Cryptic Slaughter (Santa Monica), Siege (Massachusetts) and Septic Death (Idaho) established the codes of a genre that directly influenced grindcore a few years later — Napalm Death, Carcass and Repulsion explicitly cite these bands as sources of inspiration. The genre emerged in the wake of the New York Thrash compilation (1982), where the term "thrash" still indistinctly described the most intense hardcore.

Musically, thrashcore is defined by sheer speed: songs rarely exceed one to two minutes, guitars play short dissonant riffs at ultra-fast tempos, and drums hammer constant blast beats or unrelenting sixteenth notes. Screamed or barked vocals reinforce the urgency of lyrics that are typically political and anarchist. Compared to metal or even crossover thrash — which incorporates more metal elements — thrashcore remains deeply rooted in the DIY ethic and raw aesthetic of hardcore punk, with no production sophistication.

On the current festival circuit, CORROSION OF CONFORMITY — a pioneer of the crossover between thrashcore, metal and sludge since the 1980s — is one of the most active acts on major stages, appearing at 9 festivals. Dropdead, active from Providence (Rhode Island) since 1991, embodies absolute fidelity to the genre's most radical roots, with a sound as abrasive today as at their inception. Thrashcore maintains a permanent dialogue with grindcore and powerviolence, whose direct ancestor it is.
