Aggrotech

Aggrotech — also known as hellektro or aggrotek — is a subgenre of electro-industrial that emerged in Europe in the mid-1990s. It takes root in dark electro, itself derived from the pioneering EBM (Electronic Body Music) of Front 242, Cabaret Voltaire and Front Line Assembly, before radicalising under the influence of industrial hardcore and trance. Its most distinctive sonic marker is the use of the Roland TR-909 as a straight techno rhythmic engine, combined with Roland JP-8000 synthesisers — particularly the Supersaw sound — to create dense, aggressive synthetic leads. This cocktail produces a genre halfway between the industrial dancefloor and extreme sonic provocation, belonging to the broader industrial & gothic family.

Musically, aggrotech is characterised by hammering beats at high tempo (generally 150-180 BPM), saturated basslines, heavily distorted and pitch-shifted male vocals pushed to the threshold of the inhuman, and omnipresent glitch and static effects. Compared to the more contemplative dark ambient or the more melodic coldwave, aggrotech allows no respite: it is a genre of frontal assault, designed for the dark dancefloors of gothic and industrial clubs.

The aggrotech scene is driven by acts that have established themselves as worldwide genre references. Combichrist (Norway) and SUICIDE COMMANDO (Belgium) dominate the circuit with 5 appearances each, imposing their hyper-aggressive and visceral vision. Hocico (Mexico) brings a darker emotional dimension, Grendel and Nachtmahr complete an international picture, while Agonoize and C-Lekktor keep the rawest tradition of the style very much alive.
