AfrikaBurn 2026 « Invent the World Anew »: a week of participatory art and gift-economy gathering in the Tankwa Karoo, South Africa
AfrikaBurn held its 2026 edition from 27 April to 3 May 2026 in the Tankwa Karoo desert, between the Northern Cape and Western Cape provinces of South Africa. The official site is explicit on the event's nature: AfrikaBurn is « a Burning Man regional event » — meaning it is structured around the Ten Principles of Burning Man, to which the South African community added an 11th in 2011: « Each One Teach One ».
This is not a festival in the typical lineup-and-stages sense. AfrikaBurn defines itself as « a community of participants who come together to create art, costume, performance, theme camps, music, mutant vehicles and much more — all of this created through a volunteer and gifting culture ». Programming therefore comes from theme camps, ranger-led art tours and pop-up sound camps rather than from a curated bill of headliners. The musical side fits within the broader umbrella of electronic music brought in by camp DJs.
The organisation's editorial direction makes the festival's positioning unusually explicit: « radically inclusive and accessible to anyone, with experience before theory, moral relationships before politics, survival before services, roles before jobs, ritual before symbolism ». Tickets are sold through a Direct Distribution Allocation system rather than open sale, which explains why the festival is small (≈13 000 participants) compared to other regional Burns.
Tankwa Karoo, South Africa — 27 April to 3 May 2026. The official site already trails AfrikaBurn 2027 (« coming soon(ish) ») on afrikaburn.org; ticket window dates and Direct Distribution Allocation calendar are published there a few months ahead.
