Alternative R&B is characterized by its progressive and diverse sound, often featuring atmospheric production, experimental electronic textures, and a more subdued, introspective energy compared to mainstream R&B. Emerging in the late 1990s as a stylistic alternative to contemporary R&B, it draws influences from neo-soul, electronic music, and indie pop, pushing the boundaries of traditional R&B structures. Key artists who helped define or popularize the genre include The Weeknd, FKA twigs, and Frank Ocean. This genre has significantly influenced modern pop and urban music, fostering a space for artistic experimentation and emotional depth.
