Doom metal is characterized by incredibly slow tempos, downtuned guitars, and a heavy, often melancholic atmosphere, prioritizing crushing weight and despair over speed. Emerging in the early 1970s, it directly descends from the pioneering dark and heavy sound of early Black Sabbath tracks like "Black Sabbath" and "Electric Funeral," developing as a counterpoint to faster metal genres. Key artists who solidified the genre include Pentagram, Saint Vitus, and Candlemass. Its distinct focus on oppressive slowness and profound gloom has influenced numerous metal subgenres, creating a lasting impact on heavy music.
