Downtempo, also known as chill out or downbeat, is an electronic music genre characterized by its relatively slow tempos, melodic textures, and often atmospheric, relaxed soundscapes, similar to ambient music. Emerging in the early 1990s, it developed as a counterpoint to faster dance music, finding its place in chill-out rooms of clubs, bars, and even some raves, notably in England after the 1994 Criminal Justice Bill and on Ibiza. Iconic artists include Kruder & Dorfmeister, Thievery Corporation, and Tosca. The genre has since gained widespread popularity, often featured in commercial settings and influencing modern easy listening.
