Downtempo, also known as chill out or downbeat, is an electronic music genre characterized by slow tempos and meditative atmospheres that offer a soothing alternative to the energy of dancefloors. Born in the early 1990s in the wake of British rave culture, it developed in the chill-out rooms of clubs and festivals — those decompression spaces where partygoers came to recover away from the deep bass. The Ibiza scene played a central role in its popularization, exporting this relaxing sound worldwide.

Musically, Downtempo is distinguished by its tempos generally ranging between 60 and 110 BPM, enveloping melodies built on warm synthesizers, and atmospheric textures inherited from ambient music. Elements of trip hop, jazz, funk, and world music are frequently integrated, enriching the sonic palette.
