Electronica encompasses a diverse range of contemporary electronic music, often characterized by intricate synthetic textures, varied rhythmic structures, and atmospheres that can range from energetic to introspective, not always solely for dancing. Emerging in the late 1990s, particularly in North America, the term was adopted by the popular music industry to categorize various electronic styles, including techno, big beat, drum and bass, trip hop, and ambient, building upon earlier independent label usage. Iconic artists associated with the genre include Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, and Massive Attack. Its broad scope and experimental nature have significantly influenced modern sound design and popular music production.
