Hard Techno at festivals

Hard techno keeps the straight four-to-the-floor pulse of techno but pushes tempo, compression and distortion. Its German strain, schranz, took shape in the early 1990s; the word is credited to Hesse-born DJ Chris Liebing, and the sound sits between 140 and 150 BPM, built on tight loops with an industrial edge. Headliners such as Klangkuenstler and Sara Landry have brought those rhythms back to main stages.

Hive, launched in 2021, runs every June over three days at Ferropolis, a former mining site in Gräfenhainichen, Germany; hard techno leads the bill, with hardstyle and psytrance on other stages. Amsterdam promoter Verknipt filled the Johan Cruyff ArenA in July 2024 for an all hard techno night, and Verknipt Croatia is listed for July 2027.
