IDM, or Intelligent Dance Music, is characterized by intricate, often experimental electronic rhythms, atmospheric textures, and a cerebral, sometimes detached energy that prioritizes sonic innovation over conventional danceability. Emerging in the early 1990s from the UK rave scene, it evolved as a more complex and introspective counterpoint to mainstream techno and house, drawing influences from ambient, industrial, and electro. Aphex Twin, Autechre, and Boards of Canada are pivotal artists who defined the genre's diverse soundscapes. Its influence extends deeply into various electronic music subgenres, pushing boundaries of sound design and composition.
