More about Liedermacher

Liedermacher is a German-language musical tradition born in the 1960s and 1970s, directly descended from the medieval Bänkelsang, French chanson and the American folk revival. The term — literally "songmaker" — refers to artists who write, compose and perform their own work, placing text above all other musical considerations. Wolf Biermann, Franz Josef Degenhardt, Hannes Wader and Reinhard Mey laid the foundations of a genre that claimed, from the outset, a strong political and social dimension, particularly as a response to the Nazi past and the inequalities of West German society.

Musically, Liedermacher is defined by its austerity: an acoustic guitar, rarely more, is sufficient to carry texts of great literary density. The voice is central, often narrative, and melodies recede in favour of word articulation. The thematic spectrum is broad — from politically engaged ballads to introspective love songs, from absurdist humour to philosophical meditation — but sincerity and mastery of language remain the cardinal values of the genre.

Today, Liedermacher continues to inspire artists well beyond the German-speaking world. CHARLIE WINSTON carries on this spirit with an English-language folk tinged with luminous melancholy. Gregory Alan Isakov, as much a poet as a musician, embodies the genre's sensibility within the American folk scene. Götz Widmann and Liedfett represent the contemporary German-language scene, balancing biting irony with poetic depth.

Liedermacher thrives in intimate settings — small venues, theatres, chanson festivals — where the connection between artist and audience is immediate. Events such as the Chansonfestival Berlin or the Liedermacher-Festival Augsburg celebrate this living tradition. Find upcoming events on the Liedermacher festivals page.
