Pop Metal

Pop Metal is a melodic and commercial subgenre of metal, characterized by catchy hooks, powerful vocals, and a polished sound, blending the aggressive energy of heavy metal with accessible pop sensibilities. It emerged in the latter half of the 1980s as American bands softened their sound for broader commercial appeal, drawing influences from heavy metal, hard rock, pop, and Hard FM. Iconic artists include Bon Jovi and Def Leppard. Often synonymous with glam metal, it significantly impacted mainstream music culture through extensive television promotion.

More about Pop Metal

Pop Metal is the most commercial and accessible face of 1980s heavy metal. Born in the United States in the second half of that decade, it represents a major evolution of hard rock and metal towards a smoother, more radio-friendly aesthetic, without relinquishing the power of electric guitars and the stage energy inherent to metal.

Musically, Pop Metal is characterised by enormously catchy choruses, melodic and virtuosic guitar solos, highly polished and brilliant production, energetic rhythms, and powerful vocals capable of alternating between low and high registers. Power ballads are one of the genre's pillars, allowing it to reach an even wider audience. Arrangements are often enriched with keyboards and backing vocals, and the visual imagery — flamboyant looks, long hair, makeup — is an essential component of the movement's identity. This genre is sometimes confused with glam metal, with which it shares many characteristics.

The most iconic Pop Metal bands achieved colossal commercial success. Bon Jovi, with albums like "Slippery When Wet" (1986), and Def Leppard, with "Hysteria" (1987), are its most universally recognised representatives. On FestT, BABYMETAL is the most represented artist with 18 appearances — the Japanese group's unusual fusion of J-pop and metal illustrates the contemporary diversity of the genre. SABATON (17 appearances) and Battle Beast (5) are other active figures.

On FestT, Pop Metal appears in 37 festivals. Also explore related genres on FestT such as Glam Metal, Hard Rock, and Alt Metal.
