Rawstyle

Rawstyle is a subgenre of hardcore techno that emerged in the mid-2000s in the Netherlands, in the wake of hardstyle and gabber. Born from a desire to recapture a rawer, darker energy than that of the euphoric hardstyle dominating at the time, rawstyle has established itself as one of the most intense expressions of the European hard dance scene. It draws equally from the legacy of gabber and the melodic structure of hardstyle, producing a formidable synthesis of power and darkness. Where its cousin genres sometimes seek to seduce through melody or euphoric catharsis, rawstyle fully embraces an aesthetic of controlled brutality, cultivating a sound that is unmistakeable from the very first seconds.

Musically, rawstyle is unmistakeable: a tempo locked around 150 BPM, heavily distorted and compressed bass drum kicks, reverse bass, abrasive screeches and dark melodies often tinged with industrial or metal influences. Unlike euphoric hardstyle, rawstyle deliberately discards lyrical melodies and emotional breakdowns in favour of continuous, oppressive tension. The kick drum is treated as both a rhythmic and textural weapon, its distortion sculpted to deliver maximum physical impact on the dancefloor. The rawstyle scene has produced internationally recognised figureheads.
